The Benefits Of Practical Legal Training (PLT)

Becoming a lawyer is an extremely difficult task, with many hurdles to jump before you can start practicing. Practical Legal Training (PLT) is one of those hurdles, which helps to prepare you for your future career. This blog will explain why PLT is beneficial to lawyers and why Leo Cussen is the ideal place in which to complete it.

After completing a degree in law (either the three-year Bachelor of Law as an undergraduate or the three-year Juris Doctor as a graduate), law students come away with an expanded theoretical knowledge of the law, as well as skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and the many ways in which the law can be applied. But these law students are still quite far off from being practicing lawyers, with the next step being PLT. Legal intake training is essential for both a newbie and who have practiced law for several years, for upgrading themselves.

PLT, as the name suggests, is focused on giving law students the practical skills they need in order to be effective lawyers. It’s helpful to think about the difference between university and PLT as the former being about learning, while the latter is about doing.

But what exactly is involved in PLT? Heaps. At Leo Cussen, the PLT course comprises a mix of coursework, consisting of 13 subjects, followed by a professional placement in a law firm. Students can choose to complete the course as full-time or part-time delivery. The differences are:

Full-time PLT is a 24-week course, comprising:

  • 21 weeks of coursework (around 25 hours per week);
  • three weeks’ professional placement.

Part-time PLT is a 45-week course, comprising:

  • 42 weeks of coursework (around 15 hours per week);
  • three weeks’ professional placement.

During these times, students engage in much-focused learning and practical work, where they gain an in-depth understanding of the 13 core subjects, which include: trust and office accounting; advocacy; business skills; litigation practice; commercial and corporate practice; criminal law practice; ethics; and electives such as administrative law, family law, consumer law, or banking and finance.

PLT also gives you the option of completing elective subjects, so that you can broaden your skills and learn about areas that are new to you or improve your skills in subjects that are already familiar.

At the end of PLT, students are awarded a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice as an acknowledgment of the immense and intense work they have completed and the skills they have honed. Rather than being a chore, PLT is a chance for students to finally put their skills to the test, which can help them to decide upon which field of law they would like to work in.

Following PLT, students must undertake 18-24 months of supervised practice within a law firm, giving them more opportunity to hone their skills. While completing this supervised practice may have seemed quite nerve-wracking as a graduate, PLT will have given you the confidence, experience, and skills to work in a law firm and get one major step closer to being a fully trained lawyer, after which you can apply for a Practising Certificate – and then you’re officially a lawyer!

How Do Lawyers Get Paid

Leo Cussen is one of Australia’s most popular organizations for graduates to complete their practical legal training (PLT). They have helped thousands of law students gain the skills they need to enter the legal field with confidence and experience. Due to the widespread effects of COVID-19, PLT can now be completed either fully online, in person, or a combination of the two, with all options giving students the same amount of attention from Leo Cussen’s PLT trainers and mentors.
