CBD Flower: History, Legality And More

For sure you have heard about this CBD flower that everybody is going crazy about. What is it really and why is it making a buzz? If you are curious or if you want to keep yourself updated about it, keep on reading this article.

What Is A CBD Flower?

A CBD flower is a hemp flower. Hemp is a plant under the Cannabis plant genus, together with the marijuana plant. This means that hemp and marijuana are relatives but they are different from each other.

What-Is-A-CBD-Flower

Hemp contains more CBD, or Cannabidiol, which is a non-psychoactive component. Marijuana, on the other hand, contains THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, a psychoactive component that is responsible for giving the “high” feeling to consumers. In short, you will get high in using marijuana but you won’t get that from hemp.

The flower is processed to be ready for consumption.

History

It is said that the use of hemp originated from the Middle East and Asia and the usage of it can be traced back from thousand years ago. It was also said that a Chinese Emperor once used hemp as a medicine because it was observed to help deal with rheumatism. Centuries ago, it was also called a “sacred grass” by Hindus (read more).

Hemp plants were also used before in making clothes, pottery, textiles and papers, and even sails of some ships. People from Asia then brought the plant when they migrated to Europe, and some went to South America.

There were also speculations that Great Britain’s Queen Victoria has used hemp as a cure for her menstrual cramps.

It was in 1963 that a doctor, Dr. Raphael Mechoolam, identified the Cannabidiol stereochemistry; and 1964 was when THC stereochemistry was identified. After the identification of stereochemistry of the two, it was found out that the “high” feeling is associated with the THC and not in the Cannabidiol.

However, since not all people were made aware that Tetrahydrocannabinol in marijuana is different from the Cannabidiol in hemp, they think of the two as the same. So people think that hemp is also an undesirable substance, same with marijuana.

No matter how history seems like a roller coaster for this plant, looking at it now, it seems to have a bright future.

Growing hemp was made legal when former president Trump signed the Farm Bill into law last 2018. However, even if it is a federal law, each state has its jurisdiction. Not all states in the US are approving Cannabidiol. Others are allowing it but with restrictions.
