The Lawyer Accountability Project works to make lawyers more responsive to the needs of legal consumers and to empower legal consumers to protect themselves from negligent, unscrupulous and incompetent attorneys.
Through our well-known Report Cards, appellate litigation, media campaigns, legislative work, collaboration with bar associations, white paper releases and grassroots lobbying, HALT has been on the forefront of fights to improve systems in place to weed out unethical lawyers and provide recourse to victimized legal consumers.
The Lawyer Accountability Project advocates increased public regulation and less leniency, secrecy and delay in the attorney discipline system, fee dispute mediation structure and client protection programs. We also urge local legislators to extend consumer fraud law application to lawyer misconduct. In addition, we support more workable standards for legal malpractice lawsuits and requirements that lawyers carry a minimum level of malpractice insurance.
