One of the most common complaints consumers have about lawyers is that they charge too much. Fortunately, there are a number of steps you can take to make sure you'll be charged a reasonable fee:
- Shop carefully. Before you hire an attorney, be sure to do some comparison shopping by consulting at least two to three attorneys. It will help you understand the range of services offered and the cost of those services.
- Get a written fee agreement. Have your lawyer draft a written agreement that is detailed and easy to understand. It should explain how fees will be calculated, when and how you will be billed, how much expenses will be, and how fee disputes will be resolved.
- Review your billing statements. When you receive a bill, make sure you understand what you are being charged for don't be afraid to question discrepancies.
- Keep communicating with your lawyer. If you suspect a problem, (you haven't seen a bill in months) don't wait to communicate your concerns. It could be an honest mistake that is easily fixed.
- Have a plan for resolving fee disputes. If a fee dispute occurs and you are not able to resolve the matter amicably, contact your local bar association's fee arbitration program.
