Washington, DC -- HALT, a national non-profit legal reform organization, is pleased to announce the release of the updated version of its book, Using a Lawyer.

Originally written in 1985 by Kay Ostberg and Adrien Helm, the updated version of Using a Lawyer will be released on January 4th. Over the past decade, HALT has distributed over 100,000 copies of this award-winning book. Part of HALT's Citizens Legal Manual Series, Using a Lawyer, has been updated by HALT Program Director, Theresa Meehan Rudy. The book explains in simple language how to shop for the right lawyer, manage that lawyer so consumer needs are met, and deal with problems as they arise. The appendices include information on legal malpractice, attorney discipline, a thorough bibliography and a listing of law-related web sites.

"Using a Lawyer arms consumers with the information they need to take control of the attorney-client relationship right from the start," stated HALT Executive Director James C. Turner. "The common sense wisdom contained in this book provides you with the basic tools you need to deal more effectively with a lawyer. But the most important job is still up to you. You are the boss and you are the one person who can take charge of your own legal affairs."

With attacks on legal self-help products and services on the rise, Using A Lawyer also provides legal consumers with straightforward guidance as they maneuver through the costly civil justice system.

Using a Lawyer is 176 pages and sells for $12.90, including shipping and handling. the book will be available through halt's toll-free line, 1-888-367-4258, web site: www.halt.org, and major bookstore chains including barnes and noble, and amazon.com. halt members receive a free copy with a contribution of $20 or more. review copies are available immediately to the press. please contact heidi gider at the number above or via email at halt@halt.org.
