Do you have a living will?
A living will is a document which indicates your preferences for medical treatment and intervention in the event you become unable to communicate your wishes, and it names someone who can make medical decisions on your behalf. That's a big responsibility and a living will makes sure your friends and family know what to do in the event of a medical crises.
HALT, an organization of Americans for Legal Reform, has an excellent form that is about a page and a half long, and is easily understood. And it's free! The organization has forms for all 50 states and the District of Columbia at its website. If you aren't online you can call them at (202)-887-8255.
Get copies for other people in your life. Discuss the issue at a family gathering and make sure everyone knows your health care choices in case you become incapable of making your wishes known.
