WASHINGTON - A nonprofit group pushing for transparency in the courts said the District's system of judicial oversight is one of the most secretive in the country.
A study by the group Help Abolish Legal Tyranny, or HALT, grades the states and the District on their rules for judicial conduct and their procedures for sanctioning violators. The District received a grade of D. No state received an A.
HALT senior counsel Suzanne Blonder calls the District's system "shameful."
However, the special counsel to the D.C. Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure says the report contains several inaccuracies. Henry Schulke said the commission operates independently of the court system and in accordance with federal law.
